Putterman Divider Curtains Create Multiple Zones of Play

GREAT DESIGN LEADS TO FACILITY FLEXIBILITY

Chelsea Piers is equipped with top-of-the-line safety and utility products, each designed specifically for the facility. To start, we developed separate, detailed quotes for each area of the site. For projects of this scale, this approach allows flexibility for adjustments and ensures each phase can progress independently without delays. Our engineers then collected architectural plans and photographs, laying the foundation for the design phase that followed.

The first stage of the design phase is creating shop drawings for each unique athletic space. At Chelsea Piers, our engineers take special consideration with the Backdrop Curtains in the large turf area (pictured above). The turf is surrounded by a running track, so the curtains are designed to stop a flying lacrosse ball almost instantly. Each custom curtain includes reinforced blocks of solid vinyl behind every goal to enhance durability and performance. Another custom feature is the array of Motorized Gym Divider Curtains that divide the large turf space into multiple zones of play. These massive curtains hug the slope of the ceiling above and rest flush with the turf surface below. With the turn of a key switch, both curtains in each set retract toward the ceiling using a single winch. In the wood-floored gymnasium area, our engineers design custom curtains with tracks that meet NCAA requirements for overhead clearance in competitive volleyball.

The Backdrop Curtains in the tennis court area are designed with foot traffic in mind. These custom curtains feature a blend of track and cable supports that grant the space greater egress, flexibility, and durability. At Putterman Athletics, we consider customer service a top priority. That is why we emphasize Project Management as a critical element in the success of any job. Chelsea Piers was no exception. Take a look at our process below.

Engineering Project Management

Our Project Managers lead a collaborative design effort from start to finish. As the design nears completion, they return to the site with skilled field technicians to verify the accuracy of every measurement. Using these precise field measurements, the team makes any final adjustments to the shop drawings before sending them to fabrication.

Fabrication

Fabrication for Chelsea Piers operates on a tightly managed schedule. Following the same phased approach used during the quoting process, our Fabrication Team completes production in stages. Products are shipped to the site as they are finished rather than waiting for all materials to be completed at once. This streamlined process allows Putterman installers to begin work ahead of schedule.

Installation and Hardware

Putterman maintains a nationwide network of installers who work around the clock to meet customer needs. As fabricated materials arrive on-site, our team rapidly deploys the custom products while triple-checking that every detail meets the customer’s expectations. At Putterman Athletics, we take pride in coordinating every aspect of large-scale installations—from equipment rental to hardware management. Our teams are available to work nights and weekends to ensure that new product installations never interfere with our customers’ operating hours.
